One major area of focus for the confluence of urban design, environmental planning and community based design is in the design of streets. Automobile roadways form the major public infrastructure of modern urbanization, as well as a source of both air and water pollution. The integration of the network of drainage and vegetation with roadways and walkways will result in a more sustainable pattern. Narrower roadways drain into tree lawns planted with selected grasses that absorb pollutants and filter storm drainage back into recharging underground aquifers.
